Top Five Summer Storage Tips

Summer in Fort Worth means heading to Six Flags, kayaking the Trinity River, strolling around the Fort Worth Zoo or just relaxing on the front porch with a glass of sweet tea. It also means soaring temperatures, rising humidity levels and Texas-sized thunderstorms in the afternoon. If you’re using self storage at All Storage this summer, there are a few things you can do to make the experience even better.

Maybe you’re a college student renting a storage unit with roommates so that you can all save a little money and have a place to keep your stuff during summer break. Maybe you just finished your spring cleaning and could really use a place to store all of that clutter. Or maybe you’re in the process of moving and need a storage unit to help with the transition. Whatever the case may be, here are five summer storage tips that’ll help you store smarter so that you can start your summer vacation sooner.

Ditch Your Winter Gear

A storage unit is a great repository for all of your cold weather items. Even if off-season storage isn’t your main reason for renting a storage unit, it’s smart to try to squeeze some of your sweaters in there if you have the room. Make a list of winter items to put in your storage unit.

This might include clothing such as sweaters, long-sleeved shirts and hats as well as the ski or snowboard gear you bust out for your annual Colorado ski trip. If you or your children play sports during the school year, a storage unit is a great place for that gear—just make sure it’s clean before storing it. If you typically swap out your flannel sheets and heavier comforter for lighter bedding in the summer, store those blankets in your storage unit. Lastly, if you’ve got Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations cluttering up a closet in your house, consider moving them to your storage unit.

Climate Control

Getting a climate controlled storage unit is essential during summer in Fort Worth. Fortunately, that’s easy at All Storage, where you can choose from many drive-in climate controlled storage units. This unique drive-in model not only keeps your stuff cool, it keeps you cool while you’re loading and unloading.

Protect Yourself From the Heat

Speaking of staying cool, if you’re planning on moving this summer or just making a lot of trips to and from your storage unit, it’s crucial that you protect yourself from the heat. The most important part of that is to stay hydrated. During a move, you’ll be exerting energy, so drink at least a gallon of water a day. Mix it up with drinks that contain electrolytes, such as Gatorade or Powerade and have occasional salty snacks, such as pretzels.

Wear loose, light clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Obviously you don’t need to worry about getting sunburned inside the All Storage facility, but you should protect yourself when hauling items from your home to your car.

Be sure to take breaks so that you can rest, hydrate and get proper nutrition.

Lastly, know the signs of heat exhaustion, which include accelerated heart rate, confusion, dizziness, headache and nausea. These can be eased by resting, having a snack and getting some fluids. If you ignore heat exhaustion during a move, it can lead to heat stroke, which can cause trouble breathing, hallucinations and seizures. If you’re feeling any of these things, get to a hospital right away. And remember, there’s no reason to rush a move if it’s super hot and sunny out. Moving is stressful enough without adding heat exhaustion into the mix.

Reserve a Storage Unit in Advance

With college students heading out on summer break, May through August is a busy time for storage facilities. If you know you’re going to need a storage unit this summer, reserve it in advance.
